Boring
Each student will be assigned a boring item to photograph. The student will work with a partner, assisting one another with their lighting and set up of the boring item.
Things to consider:
What makes something insignificant suddenly catch our eye? How do everyday items adopt new significance or gain visual interest? How can a mundane object develop in poignancy.
Your mundane object may be:
cotton balls, clear tape, a white box, or still life props painted white
Lighting can include:
Natural light
Light boxes
Reflective light
Direct studio light
Indirect studio light
Lighting – how the play of light across an object may draw attention, be it the deliberate shining of a spotlight, or the timely passing of a sunbeam.
Placement – how the isolating of an object e.g. cordoning off, restricting access, framing, placing on a shelf, plinth etc. might give it greater significance.
Contrast - how an object might be in visual contrast with its environment (via color, scale, tone etc.), or be encountered out of context - experienced as an unexpected or surreal juxtaposition, in contrast with our usual expectations
