Art History- The art of
Romare Bearden
Today students are given a specific prompt centered around Romare Bearden, an American artist known for his collage work and connection to The Harlem Renaissance. He is our inspiration artist as students get closer to creating their first larger art project in class. Students will create a short keynote based on the prompt given to them at their table. Some of these prompts include research on:
The Great Migration
The Harlem Renaissance
Romare Bearden
The origin of collage
Composition in art and music
Improvisation in art and music
Metamorphosis is our theme for the day
Wednesday February 17th you will have a sub while I attempt to get over the flu. Your task today is to draw three portraits in your sketchbook. Use one page for each portrait.
Your portraits:
1. One will be a self portrait, using your iPad as a mirror or photo.
2. The second portrait will be a drawing of you morphing into an animal of your choice.
3. The third will be the animal you have morphed into.
The examples I have given you show four transitions (four drawings). I am asking for three, as this should be a one day assignment. This will give me insight into your ability to focus, draw observation-ally, and your skill level.
So- step one, choose an animal. I suggest looking for a portrait of an animal with neck and face. Step two, take a straight forward selfie, looking into the lens of the iPad. Begin your drawing of you, make it fill the page. Be thoughtful about the placement of eyes, nose, mouth. We will be learning how to do this later this year.
I hope to be back in health by Friday when I see you next. Trust me, you don't want what I have. Please be ready to think about your song choice on Friday February 19th. We will discuss colors, patterns, movement, and more.
This week February 8th-12th
We will create name tags for art drawers and finish up requisite lesson on Elements of Art and Principles of Design by capturing photos that show examples of these ideas.
Students should choose a song to work with for our upcoming project. The song will be interpreted visually based on rhythm, pattern, balance and more.
Welcome Second Semester Visual Art Explore students!
What do you need? Please bring a sketchbook to class on Monday February 1st. A sketchbook that measures 9X12 is recommended. You will be given a drawer to keep your work in for the semester. You will also be able to keep your sketchbook in the drawer.
I can't wait to meet all of you!
I look forward to giving you opportunities to create visual art in a way that makes you realize that YOU are and artist!!!

Students were asked to use their iPads to take photos of The Principles of Design: Balance, pattern, rhythm, movement, variety, unity, proportion, and emphasis. Students upload their photos to PicCollage where they label the Principle of Design on each photo, then create a Keynote (like a ppt but Apple) to share with their classmates.
Students are to turn their keynotes in on Filr, but there has been some trouble with this program. At this time students can not turn the keynote in.
Later this week students will be introduced to Romare Bearden, an important artist known for his participation in The Harlem Renaissance.
